A citizen initiative in Canada's Alberta province, which gathered over 300,000 signatures demanding independence, has encountered a significant legal obstacle.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, a provincial court has ordered the suspension of the signature campaign, citing a failure to conduct the constitutionally required consultation process with First Nations. Despite this, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has announced an appeal against the court's decision, emphasizing that the will of hundreds of thousands of citizens cannot be ignored.
Meanwhile, the "Forever Canadian" group, led by former Deputy Premier Thomas Lukaszuk, has countered by collecting over 400,000 signatures in support of remaining part of Canada. The proposed referendum offers voters two choices: maintaining Alberta's status as a Canadian province or initiating a legal process for separation. While the vote would not immediately declare independence, it could establish a legal framework for future secession. This movement is largely driven by "Western alienation," a long-standing sentiment rooted in economic grievances and dissatisfaction with federal environmental policies in Ottawa.
