Azerbaijani national team member Ahmad Yusifov won gold at the World Judo Championships held in Baku. Competing in the 60kg category, he said he faced an unexpected challenge at the start of the final before regaining his composure and executing his technique.
Yusifov said he had been thinking about both winning a medal and becoming champion before the competition. He said he felt good throughout the tournament and made the most of his chance to win. Becoming world champion at 27 was especially gratifying for him.
The judoka recalled that he had lost to his final opponent once before. Yusifov said he stepped onto the tatami intent on winning this time and believed he would succeed as soon as he took hold of his opponent’s belt and began his technique.
Yusifov said he was Azerbaijan’s first world champion in the 60kg category and the country’s fourth world champion overall. He credited his coaches, personal coach, grandfather and Olympic champion Elnur Mammadli with playing a major role in his success. His next goals are to win European and Olympic titles.
