Afghan forces killed 41 militants and detained 62 others during several days of fighting in Nuristan province in eastern Afghanistan.
According to Afghanistan’s Ministry of Defense, the operations were conducted in Kamdesh district, near the Durand Line. The ministry had earlier reported that 28 militants had been killed and 32 detained.
“According to the latest information, a total of 41 militants from Shar-ul-Fasad and Daesh (ISIS) were killed during the operations, while another 62 were captured alive,” the ministry said.
Kabul submits protest to Pakistani representative
Afghanistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Sept. 29 that Pakistan’s chargé d’affaires in Kabul had been summoned and handed an official protest over the alleged crossing of armed groups into Nuristan.
Afghanistan accused the Pakistani army of supporting the recruitment, organization, training and supply of armed groups, and subsequently helping them cross the border into Afghan territory.
The Afghan side said these actions constituted a violation of the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and were contrary to Islamic, international, humanitarian and good-neighborly principles.
Pakistan rejects allegations
Pakistan had earlier described Afghanistan’s allegations concerning the fighting in Nuristan as unfounded. In a statement issued on Sunday, Pakistan’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting denied any involvement by the country’s security forces or intelligence agencies in the incidents.
Pakistan said Afghanistan had provided no evidence to support its claims. The ministry’s statement said there was no identifying information, documentation, correspondence, forensic evidence or material from an independent verification.
The latest developments come as tensions between the two countries have increased and clashes have recently occurred along the border. The Durand Line is the de facto border between Afghanistan and Pakistan, although Afghanistan has historically disputed its status.
