Israeli forces have killed 262 Palestinian journalists and injured 433 others since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip in 2023, the Gaza Government Media Office said on Saturday.
The statement, issued to mark the International Day of Solidarity with Palestinian Journalists, described the campaign against journalists as one of the most severe in modern history, according to the Anadolu Agency.
Among those killed were 26 women journalists, while 50 journalists and media workers have been arrested since the beginning of the war. The media office said 23 of them remained detained under what it called “harrowing conditions”.
Damage to Gaza’s media sector
The statement estimated losses to Gaza’s media sector at more than $800 million.
According to the office, Israeli forces completely or partially destroyed 12 print-media offices, 23 digital-media offices, 12 local radio stations, 16 television and satellite channels, 27 printing presses and the offices of five press-freedom organisations.
The Gaza Government Media Office called on the international community, the United Nations, the International Federation of Journalists and the Federation of Arab Journalists to take immediate steps to provide legal and on-the-ground protection for Palestinian journalists.
Casualties since October 2023
Israel has continued its war in Gaza since October 2023. The conflict has killed nearly 74,000 people and injured about 175,000 others, while causing extensive damage to civilian infrastructure, the office said.
Despite a ceasefire agreement that took effect on October 10, 2025, Israeli airstrikes and gunfire have continued in the enclave, killing 1,408 Palestinians and injuring 4,916 others, including journalists, according to the statement.
