Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Tuesday that US President Donald Trump did not demand that Kyiv unilaterally halt strikes on Russia’s energy infrastructure during their talks earlier in the day.
Speaking at a news conference on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly after meeting Trump, Zelenskyy said Ukraine was prepared to agree to an energy ceasefire provided Russia stopped attacking Ukrainian energy facilities.
“We are ready for an energy ceasefire if the Russians do not strike our energy infrastructure,” Zelenskyy said.
He added that US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner would convey Kyiv’s proposal to Moscow.
Ukraine seeks support for Patriot production
Zelenskyy said producing “Patriot” air defence systems in Ukraine could take around one to one-and-a-half years. Kyiv had asked Trump to help accelerate the process, and the US president viewed the necessary licensing arrangements positively, he said.
Asked about deliveries of “Patriot” interceptors to Ukraine, Zelenskyy said Kyiv had not received a definitive response.
“No one said ‘no,’ but I did not receive a particularly specific answer,” he said.
Zelenskyy also recalled that Ukraine and Germany had signed a contract for the delivery of 600 “Patriot” missiles in two batches of 300 each.
Zelenskyy asks Trump to involve China in peace talks
The Ukrainian president said he had also asked Trump to involve Chinese President Xi Jinping in negotiations aimed at achieving peace in Ukraine.
