A new report released by the US Government Accountability Office (GAO) has identified critical deficiencies in the security protocols maintained by the US Secret Service. The findings suggest that the agency has failed to update key protective measures for the US President and other high-ranking officials since 1991.

According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the report highlights that the agency continues to rely on antiquated methods, particularly in addressing modern threats such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The GAO analysis indicates that between 2015 and 2025, there were 83 security incidents that hindered protective operations, yet only 25 of these events resulted in subsequent policy adjustments.

The report underscores a systemic issue: the Secret Service is not currently mandated to update its internal policies following security incidents. This lack of a formal requirement creates a significant information gap, impeding the continuous improvement of protective measures necessary to counter evolving global threats.

The scrutiny of these protocols has intensified following recent logistical challenges involving US President Donald Trump, including an incident where the President was required to switch aircraft for security reasons while returning from a NATO summit in Turkey. Investigations into security measures surrounding the President and the "Air Force One" fleet remain ongoing.

The US Secret Service, a federal law enforcement agency under the Department of Homeland Security, is tasked with conducting criminal investigations and protecting US political leaders. The GAO report serves as a stark reminder of the challenges federal agencies face in modernizing their operational frameworks to keep pace with rapid technological advancements and shifting security landscapes.
