The US military’s Central Command (CENTCOM) on Wednesday rejected an Iranian official’s claim that US forces were using threatening language against Iranian sailors.
In a statement posted on “X”, CENTCOM described as false an allegation by Iran’s ambassador to the International Maritime Organization that US forces were causing “serious stress and psychological pressure” among civilian crews.
Iran filed a formal protest with the International Maritime Organization last week, alleging that US forces were misusing an emergency channel and turning it into “an instrument of military intimidation and psychological pressure against civilian crews.”
CENTCOM defended the US blockade against Iran, saying it had been in place for months and had been communicated professionally.
The command accused Iran of being the “only country attacking civilian mariners transiting regional waters”. It said commercial traffic continued to pass through the Strait of Hormuz with coordinated protection from US forces and regional partners.
The dispute comes as Iran and the US remain at odds over navigation through the strategic strait amid heightened maritime tensions.
