US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz has described Washington’s competition with China over artificial intelligence as more complicated than the Cold War, citing the extensive economic ties between the two countries, according to CNN.

“Unlike in the Cold War or any other adversary we've had in the past—Germany, Japan, etc.—we've never been so intertwined economically with a competitor or potential adversary like we are with the People's Republic of China, so it is a much more complex situation,” Waltz told the US television network.

Waltz said the United States could support narrowly focused bilateral safeguards during a forthcoming summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Possible areas include the spread of algorithms, nuclear weapons systems and ensuring that humans remain involved in critical decision-making.

He opposed domestic regulations that could restrict technological development, saying the United States must not “put a throttle” on innovators and entrepreneurs developing future solutions.

US-Denmark agreement and Arctic security

Discussing northern defence, Waltz called a new security agreement between the United States and Denmark concerning Greenland an urgent measure for strategic early-warning capabilities.

“If we're ever attacked by any type of intercontinental missiles, they'll come over the Arctic,” he said, adding that radar and sensor facilities in the region require strong protection and unrestricted access.

Waltz linked Arctic access to continental missile-defence systems, an icebreaker agreement with Finland, increased NATO military spending and the development of energy and critical-mineral resources in the polar region.

He said diminishing ice cover was allowing shipping to avoid southern chokepoints and use Arctic routes, making agreements with Denmark and Greenland important for protecting the High North.

Maritime security and pressure on Iran

Waltz also said the United States and its allies would take “decisive action” against any actors disrupting civilian maritime traffic in the Bab al-Mandeb, the Strait of Hormuz or the Suez Canal.

Asked about reports that military confrontations could continue until 2029, Waltz said time was on Washington’s side. He said sanctions would remain in place indefinitely until Iran made verified concessions on its nuclear programme and behaviour.

According to Waltz, the pressure is aimed directly at Iran’s power structure because the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps controls between 40% and 50% of the country’s economy.

CNN also reported that the administration of President Trump would prefer Saudi Arabia to counter the threat rather than rely on direct US military action. A US official told the network that Washington was expanding the exchange of targeting data and intelligence with Riyadh, while sources said Saudi officials were confident in their forces after a decade of training.
