The United States has denied visas to the media team due to accompany Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during his planned visit to New York, an Iranian official said Monday, according to Iran’s semi-official Mehr news agency.
Habibollah Abbasi, director general of public relations at the Iranian presidency, said the public would be kept informed of developments related to bilateral meetings Pezeshkian is scheduled to hold during his visit.
Pezeshkian’s five-day visit
Abbasi said the president’s visit would last five days, including two days allocated for travel. Pezeshkian is due to travel to New York on Tuesday to attend the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
He will be accompanied by Mohsen Haji-Mirzaei, chief of staff of the Iranian presidency, and Seyyed Abbas Mousavi, deputy head of presidential protocol and ceremonies.
During his stay in New York, Pezeshkian is expected to meet several leaders attending the UN meetings, Abbasi said.
Tensions remain between Washington and Tehran
US authorities have not commented on the reported visa refusals.
The development comes amid continued tensions between the United States and Iran, with negotiations stalled over disagreements concerning navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway for energy and commodity supplies.
On Feb. 28, the United States and Israel launched a war against Iran, prompting Tehran to retaliate with strikes on Israel and other regional countries hosting US assets.
