US prosecutors have accused Venezuela’s former leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, of conspiring to commit torture, Reuters reported.
The charges were made public on Thursday and add to existing drug-trafficking and weapons charges, which Maduro and Flores have denied.
Maduro, 63, and Flores, 69, have been held since January at a detention centre in Brooklyn. US forces took them into custody during a pre-dawn raid on their compound in Caracas.
The new allegations relate to the alleged torture of US citizens held in Venezuela while Maduro was in power.
Human rights groups in Venezuela and former prisoners have long denounced what they describe as “systematic torture” in the country’s prisons.
The trial of Maduro and Flores is scheduled to begin in June 2027.
