US Homeland Security Investigations agents searched the home of Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar on Monday morning as part of what authorities described as a criminal investigation.
A US Justice Department spokesperson told CBS News, the BBC’s US partner, that agents had executed a judicially authorised search warrant at the home in the Washington, DC, area.
The search was part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation, the spokesperson said, providing no further details.
Omar was born in Somalia and came to the United States at the age of eight, fleeing war. She was first elected to Congress in 2018 and is an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump.
Congress is currently out of session, and it is unclear whether Omar was at the home during the search. The BBC said it had contacted her for comment.
