United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly condemned Russian attacks on major Ukrainian cities, his spokesman Stephane Dujarric said on Wednesday.
At least 20 people were killed in a barrage of Russian drones and missiles across Ukraine, according to the information provided by Dujarric.
Guterres was also deeply concerned about the rising number of civilian casualties from increased Ukrainian attacks in Russia, including recent strikes in the Moscow region, Dujarric said.
“All attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure wherever they occur are a violation of international humanitarian law and must end immediately,” he added.
The UN said attacks and fighting along Ukraine’s front lines over the previous 24 hours had caused more than 150 civilian casualties.
Strikes damaged civilian facilities, including a hospital, as well as energy infrastructure. Electricity supplies were disrupted nationwide, leaving some areas without power.
Dujarric said the UN and its humanitarian partners had provided medical care, psychological support and emergency shelter to people affected by the attacks, alongside first responders and municipal services.
Moscow and Kyiv have intensified strikes in recent months, targeting logistics centres, ports and energy infrastructure. Both deny deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure and say their strikes are aimed at military targets or facilities linked to military activity.
