UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed alarm over the escalating daily attacks on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, saying they are causing a record number of civilian casualties, according to a statement issued by his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric.
Guterres also voiced concern over the growing number of civilian casualties resulting from intensified Ukrainian attacks inside the Russian Federation, including Moscow.
“The UN chief strongly condemns all attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure, wherever they occur, and urges an immediate end to this dangerous escalatory spiral,” the statement said.
Guterres calls for renewed diplomacy
The secretary-general urged a renewed focus on diplomacy to urgently reduce tensions and create conditions for an immediate, full and unconditional ceasefire.
He described a ceasefire as the first step toward a just, comprehensive and lasting peace in Ukraine.
Any settlement, Guterres stressed, should comply with international law, including the UN Charter and relevant UN resolutions.
“The United Nations stands ready to support all meaningful efforts to that end,” the statement added.
