Two Latvian men have been arrested on suspicion of trespassing at a Royal Air Force base in Cambridgeshire, police said on Thursday.
The suspects, aged 36 and 32, were detained under the National Security Act after a breach was found in the perimeter fence at RAF Molesworth, according to a Metropolitan Police statement.
A Ministry of Defence Police security patrol raised the alarm after finding an abandoned vehicle at about 10 pm local time (2100 GMT) on Wednesday. A small breach in the fence was subsequently identified, and two men were found and arrested at about 2 am (0100 GMT) on 8 October, the statement said.
The Latvian nationals, who currently live in the UK, were arrested inside the base perimeter. They were initially held on suspicion of trespassing at a prohibited site and criminal damage, then further arrested on suspicion of an offence under Section 4 of the National Security Act 2023: entering a prohibited place for a purpose prejudicial to the UK.
Both men remain in police custody.
Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, said there was nothing at this stage to suggest the incident was connected to events at RAF Fairford the previous week.
Seven people were arrested last week over a suspected plot near RAF Fairford, police said.
