U.S. President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he had not yet announced a final decision on suspending sanctions and tariffs related to Russian exports. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said officials needed more time to assess the situation. Rubio said Trump would take up to 60 days to examine the economic impact of the sanctions and tariffs, AnewZ reports.
Trump told reporters in Palm Beach, Florida: “Many of you still don’t know what my decision is, but we’ll determine that, and you’ll find out.”
On Friday, Trump signed an order suspending key sanctions and tariffs under the Graham Act, which he signed last month, after lawmakers called for pressure on Moscow over Russia’s war in Ukraine. Tariffs on Russian goods and measures targeting countries that buy Russian oil and gas were due to take effect next week. The order signed on Friday did not specify how long the relief would last, while Rubio said Trump had chosen a 60-day assessment period.
The decision comes weeks before the midterm elections in November. Trump is facing pressure over high energy prices as the war with Iran disrupts global oil supplies.
