US President Donald Trump said Russian President Vladimir Putin was surprised by his role in mediating the resolution of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict in 2025. Trump made the remarks at a rally in Syracuse, New York, on Friday.
“Putin, in fact, couldn’t believe it. He told me he had been trying to resolve this conflict for 10 years but couldn’t. I did it in two days,” Trump told supporters.
The US president also repeated his displeasure at not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. He called the decision an “indelible stain” on Norway and those who award the prize, and accused the committee of being made up of anti-democratic ideologues.
The Nobel Committee is based in Oslo, Norway. On the same day, Navi Pillay, a former judge of the International Criminal Court in The Hague who led a UN report that concluded Israel had committed genocide in Gaza, was announced as the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Trump said he did not know Pillay and called her a “mystery person.”
Trump also said, without providing evidence, that he had helped prevent wars between North and South Korea, Japan and North Korea, and China and Taiwan.
Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson accompanied Trump at the rally. Tyson expressed his support for the US president, who said he had watched Tyson’s fights and joked that he would not want to get in the ring with him.
The event was held ahead of the November elections in support of Republican Bruce Blakeman, a candidate for New York governor, and other Republican candidates.
