US President Donald Trump’s approval rating has fallen to 32%, the lowest level of his political career, as Republicans express growing dissatisfaction with his handling of living costs and the unpopular war with Iran, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll.
The four-day survey, which concluded on Sunday, found that 73% of Republicans approved of Trump’s job performance, down from 82% in a poll conducted a week earlier. His overall approval rating stood at 35% in that previous survey.
Cost of living remains top concern
Only 17% of respondents approved of Trump’s handling of the cost of living, which was identified as the most important issue. Voters have said the issue will influence their choices in the November 3 midterm elections, when Republicans are defending narrow majorities in Congress.
Trump returned to the White House in January 2025 after pledging to curb inflation and end foreign wars. Shortly after his inauguration, his approval rating stood at 47% in a Reuters/Ipsos poll.
Iran war weighs on Republican support
Discontent among Republicans has increased since Trump launched the war with Iran in February, which contributed to a sharp rise in petrol and diesel prices. For the first time, Republicans who disapprove of his handling of the cost of living outnumbered those who approve, by 51% to 44%.
Trump said on Wednesday that the United States was “hopefully toward the end” of the war with Iran, raising the possibility of renewed diplomacy while fighting continued in Yemen. Tehran, however, has not confirmed that direct negotiations with Washington have resumed.
The online poll collected responses from 1,277 adults across the United States and had a margin of error of three percentage points.
