Tom Cruise will receive the 52nd American Film Institute (AFI) Life Achievement Award, the organisation’s highest honour for a career in cinema, AFI announced Wednesday, according to Anadolu Agency.

The 64-year-old actor and producer will be honoured at a gala ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on April 24, 2027.

“Tom Cruise is a global icon,” Kathleen Kennedy, chair of the AFI Board of Trustees, said. She praised his commitment as an actor and producer and said she admired his belief in movies and their ability to bring people together.

Cruise’s career spans more than four decades. His major Hollywood films include “Top Gun”, “Mission: Impossible”, “Jerry Maguire”, “Rain Man” and “A Few Good Men”.

His films have grossed nearly $13 billion worldwide, according to AFI, with “Top Gun: Maverick” remaining his highest-grossing release.

Cruise has received four Academy Award nominations: three for acting and one for producing “Top Gun: Maverick”, which was nominated for Best Picture. He also received an honorary Oscar at the Academy’s Governors Awards in 2025.

The award comes weeks after the release of Cruise’s latest film, “Digger”, directed by two-time Oscar-winning filmmaker Alejandro G. Inarritu. The “Warner Bros.” satire has grossed approximately $42 million worldwide at the box office, despite a reported production budget exceeding $160 million.

Established in 1973, the AFI Life Achievement Award recognises people whose careers have made significant contributions to cinema. Previous recipients include Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Nicole Kidman and Eddie Murphy, who received the honour in 2026.
