Ten people, including three children, were injured on Saturday when a car crashed into a crowd of rugby league fans in Newcastle, Australian authorities said.
The crash happened at about 9:30 a.m. local time on Newcastle Link Road in the suburb of Wallsend. Supporters had gathered there to farewell the Newcastle Knights ahead of Sunday’s National Rugby League Grand Final.
Injuries and hospitalisations
A five-year-old girl was in critical but stable condition, while a 67-year-old man was in serious but stable condition.
Four other people remained in hospital in stable condition, and four had been discharged.
Driver charged
Police arrested the 18-year-old driver at the scene and later charged him with several offences, including dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm. His provisional driver’s licence was suspended, and he is due to appear in Newcastle Bail Court on Sunday.
Newcastle Lord Mayor Gavin Morris told Australian broadcaster “ABC” that preliminary information suggested the driver, who was among the team’s supporters, had been revving the car before losing control.
Police said the incident was not believed to have been a targeted attack.
