Flights across Italy were severely slowed on Friday because of technical problems with the data transmission network used for air traffic control nationwide, according to “ANSA”.
Air navigation service provider “ENAV” said it introduced measures to regulate traffic flows as air traffic increased and the anomalies persisted, in order to maintain the highest level of operational safety.
The measures included a temporary reduction in the number of aircraft that could be managed in the airspace, “ENAV” said.
The company ruled out malicious activity, saying neither a hacker attack nor sabotage caused the fault.
The anomalies in the geographical data transmission network supporting air traffic control services across the country were detected during the night, “ENAV” said.
As technical checks identified the source of the problem in the data transmission network, the company worked to determine the cause and restore the systems.
Several airports across Italy were affected, with cancellations and delays reported.
