Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations in New York on Wednesday, according to the Pakistani prime minister’s office.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s “strong commitment to its historic and fraternal relations with Syria” and expressed support for Syria’s sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity and political independence.
He also wished the Syrian people success in their efforts to achieve stabilization, peace and economic recovery.
Areas of planned cooperation
The two leaders discussed expanding bilateral ties through high-level visits, institutional mechanisms and cooperation in trade, investment, education, information technology and other areas of mutual interest.
Sharif said Pakistan was ready to contribute to Syria’s reconstruction and economic recovery.
Regional peace and the Palestine issue
The Pakistani prime minister stressed the importance of dialogue, diplomacy and respect for the UN Charter in promoting regional peace and stability.
Al-Sharaa and Sharif also exchanged views on the regional situation. Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and for a just and lasting solution to the Palestine issue in accordance with relevant UN resolutions and international law.
