Sudan’s army said on Saturday that it had dealt a “knockout blow” to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and their ally, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), in Blue Nile state, causing heavy losses in personnel and equipment.
The army’s Fourth Infantry Division said its troops and supporting forces attacked the two groups in the areas of Minza and Bashkarkad. The operation disrupted their movements and thwarted attempts to advance towards army positions, according to the statement.
The army said several vehicles and pieces of equipment were destroyed and attacking fighters were forced to retreat under fire. It did not provide casualty figures. The RSF did not immediately comment on the army’s account.
Drone attacks reported in Blue Nile
Earlier on Saturday, Sudanese authorities said RSF drones had targeted the Blue Nile governor’s home and several civilian sites in Damazin, the state capital.
Blue Nile, in southeastern Sudan, has seen an escalation in fighting in recent days, with the RSF and allied SPLM-N launching attacks in several areas of the state.
On Aug. 24, the United Nations said drone attacks had killed 1,100 civilians in Sudan between January and June this year.
War has displaced millions
Sudan has been at war since April 2023, when disagreements over integrating the RSF into the military led to fighting between the paramilitary group and the army. The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced about 13 million, according to UN and international estimates.
