Windy weather is expected across Azerbaijan today, with northeasterly winds forecast to strengthen to up to 28 meters per second in some areas.
“Operative Information Center-OMM” reports, citing the National Hydrometeorological Service of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, that skies in Baku and the Absheron Peninsula will be mostly partly cloudy, becoming overcast at times.
No precipitation is expected during the day. Temperatures will range from 20°C to 23°C, relatively lower than in recent days. Despite the sunshine, conditions may feel deceptively warm.
Weather conditions are forecast to be more unsettled in the regions, with intermittent precipitation. Rain may become heavy in some mountainous and foothill areas, accompanied by thunderstorms and hail. Precipitation in mountainous areas may turn to sleet and snow.
Temperatures in lowland districts are expected to rise to 28°C. Conditions and temperatures will therefore vary across the country. Residents are advised to monitor forecasts and take care amid strengthening winds, the possibility of precipitation and changing temperatures.
How can strong winds affect people?
Windy weather can affect not only daily activities but also how some people feel. People who are sensitive to weather changes report symptoms such as headaches, fatigue and weakness. However, these symptoms do not affect everyone and may not be caused solely by weather conditions.
Strong winds can lift dust and other fine particles into the air and carry them elsewhere. This may cause sneezing, a runny nose, eye irritation and coughing, particularly among people sensitive to dust and other airborne irritants. People with asthma and other respiratory conditions should also take extra care in such conditions.
People who are sensitive to dust should spend less time outdoors in areas with high dust levels and use an appropriate protective mask if necessary. It is important to seek medical help if shortness of breath or other serious symptoms develop.
What are the risks in windy weather?
Winds reaching 28 meters per second may break tree branches, move lightweight objects and make advertising signs and other structures hazardous. People should take particular care in open areas, near construction sites and beneath trees.
Residents are advised to follow these safety measures:
- Do not stand near trees, large advertising signs or temporary structures.
- Secure lightweight objects on balconies and in yards that could be blown away.
- Drivers should take extra care and adjust their speed to road and weather conditions.
- People sensitive to dust and other particles should limit the time they spend outdoors in windy weather.
- Dress for the weather and do not assume it is warm based only on sunny skies.
Sunny skies do not always mean warm weather. When going outside during the day, it is important to consider wind speeds as well as the temperature. Residents are advised to follow official forecasts and observe safety measures as weather conditions are expected to change.
