A powerful earthquake in Indonesia has resulted in 20 confirmed fatalities, according to reports from rescue services cited by the Operative Information Center-OMM, referencing Xinhua news agency. Authorities have also reported that six individuals have sustained injuries, while two people remain trapped under debris.

Earlier reports indicated varying casualty figures as the situation evolved. According to information from the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing The Straits Times, the governor of the East Nusa Tenggara province initially reported fatalities caused by collapsing buildings. Residential and government structures, along with critical infrastructure, have sustained significant damage across the affected region.

The seismic event, which registered a magnitude of 7.7, occurred off the coast of Indonesia. The epicenter was located approximately 161 km northeast of Labuan Bajo, a city with a population of roughly 188,000, at a depth of 35 km. Following the initial tremor, numerous aftershocks were recorded, prompting authorities to issue tsunami warnings. Residents in the northern coastal areas of Flores Island, as well as those in southern districts and surrounding islands, were advised to evacuate and move away from the shoreline.

Indonesia is located on the "Pacific Ring of Fire," an area known for high seismic and volcanic activity. The country frequently experiences earthquakes due to the convergence of several tectonic plates, making disaster preparedness and rapid response critical for the nation's safety infrastructure.
