South Korean group “Stray Kids” will not submit music for consideration at the 2027 Grammy Awards, its agency “JYP Entertainment” confirmed on Friday.
“Stray Kids did not submit any work to the Grammys,” the agency said, without giving a reason. The group’s decision follows “BTS” announcing in July that it would also not submit music for the awards.
Debate over new Asian pop category
The decisions come amid criticism of the Recording Academy’s new Best Asian Pop Music Performance category, which is due to debut at next year’s ceremony.
The category will cover music including K-pop, J-pop and C-pop. Eligible recordings must make “meaningful use” of one or more Asian languages.
The Recording Academy said this week it would proceed with the category after consulting members of the Asian music community. Chief Executive Harvey Mason Jr. acknowledged opposition but said the academy had also received strong support for retaining it.
Grammy ceremony scheduled for February
When “BTS” announced its decision in July, the group said it hoped music could be “heard and loved for what it is, rather than being divided by region or language.”
All eight members of “Stray Kids” were invited earlier this year to become voting members of the Recording Academy. The 69th Grammy Awards are scheduled for Feb. 7, 2027.
