Sri Lanka’s High Court has convicted 15 men charged with plotting the 2019 Easter Sunday bomb attacks, according to the BBC. Nine other defendants were acquitted.
Those found guilty include Naufer Moulavi, whom prosecutors described as the mastermind behind the suicide bombings.
Coordinated attacks killed 270 people
The coordinated explosions struck three churches and three luxury hotels, making them the deadliest attacks in Sri Lanka since the end of the country’s civil war in 2009.
Forty-five foreign nationals were among those killed. More than 500 people were injured, while all the bombers who carried out the attacks died in the explosions.
Defendants faced thousands of charges
Investigators have previously linked the attacks to Islamist extremists. The 25 men indicted in the case were members of Sri Lanka’s Muslim minority; one of them died in custody.
The defendants faced more than 23,000 charges, including murder, conspiracy to commit terrorism and illegal possession of firearms.
