Saudi Arabia said King Fahd International Airport in Dammam came under attack on Sunday evening, while Yemen’s Houthi group claimed responsibility for strikes on two airports and major oil facilities in the kingdom.
The Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation said damage assessments and safety inspections were under way at the airport in coordination with relevant authorities. It gave no immediate details about casualties or the extent of the damage.
The authority said the incident came amid continued attacks on civilian aviation facilities in Saudi Arabia. Earlier on Sunday, it reported an attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh that caused injuries, without specifying their number or severity.
Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree, in a televised statement, claimed responsibility for the attack on King Fahd International Airport, saying it had directly hit its target and disrupted air traffic.
Saree also claimed attacks on King Khalid International Airport, “Aramco’s” Shedgum gas plant and the company’s Tanajib oil facility in the Eastern Province.
He said the operations were carried out in retaliation for Saudi airstrikes on Yemen and threatened further attacks on the kingdom.
