Russian forces attacked Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, with ballistic missiles early Thursday, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said. Two people were killed and six others injured in the strikes.
Debris fell in several districts
Missile debris fell in three districts of the city, damaging a maternity hospital, a clinic, an apartment building and private houses. Three of those injured were medical workers, while two people were reported to be in serious condition.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack. He called for tougher sanctions against Russia and the provision of additional air defense systems to Ukraine.
Facilities also damaged in Odesa
Overnight attacks also damaged residential, medical and educational facilities in the Black Sea port city of Odesa.
Ukraine hands over two North Korean soldiers to South Korea
In an address to the United Nations General Assembly, Zelenskyy said Ukraine had handed over two North Korean prisoners of war to South Korea.
“It is not easy to capture these people alive. When one of them realized he would be taken prisoner, he attempted to kill himself. He was surprised that fate had not allowed him to die,” Zelenskyy said.
The president did not provide further details about the handover. Ukraine captured the two North Korean nationals in Russia’s Kursk region in January last year.
Kyiv has repeatedly called on its international partners to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses as Russian missile and drone attacks continue to target cities and critical infrastructure. The United Nations General Assembly is the UN’s main deliberative body, bringing together representatives of all member states for discussions on international issues.
