The Russian Ambassador to Armenia, Sergey Kopirkin, has been recalled to Moscow for consultations, a move reportedly prompted by the Armenian leadership's recent efforts to strengthen relations with the European Union.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing reports from the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the decision reflects growing tensions regarding Yerevan's foreign policy trajectory.
"The Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Armenia, Sergey Pavlovich Kopirkin, has been summoned to Moscow for consultations in connection with the steps taken by the Armenian leadership toward rapprochement with the EU, which are viewed as detrimental to cooperation within the framework of the Eurasian Economic Union," the official statement noted.
This diplomatic development occurs against the backdrop of shifting geopolitical alignments in the South Caucasus. Russia, which has historically maintained a significant security and economic presence in Armenia, has expressed increasing concern over Yerevan's diversification of its foreign policy partnerships. The Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), led by Moscow, serves as a primary economic bloc for Armenia, and Russian officials have frequently signaled that actions undermining this integration could have broader implications for bilateral relations.
