US Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered Iran’s delegation to the UN General Assembly, including Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, to leave the United States after diplomatic negotiations stalled, a US official confirmed to Anadolu Agency on Wednesday.
The US mission to the United Nations informed Iran’s UN mission on Monday evening that Araghchi’s delegation had to leave New York “immediately” on Rubio’s orders, Axios first reported.
A US official told the news website that the delegation had “overstayed their welcome”, adding that the UN General Assembly had ended and it was therefore time for the Iranian officials to depart.
According to the official, the delegation boarded a flight from New York to Doha at 1:20 a.m. local time on Tuesday, or 0520 GMT. A second source said Araghchi had already been scheduled to return to Tehran on Monday night.
Talks reach stalemate
The White House had expected potential progress in discussions with Iran on Monday morning, but by late afternoon it had become clear that the negotiations had reached a deadlock, Axios reported.
Qatari mediators are continuing talks with both sides over a compromise proposal, regional sources told the news website.
War and efforts to restore navigation
The United States and Israel launched a war against Iran on Feb. 28. Tehran responded with missile and drone attacks across the region and effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important route for energy supplies.
Efforts to end the conflict have continued since the United States and Iran signed a memorandum in June outlining immediate measures to restore freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and address Iran’s nuclear programme.
