Azerbaijan Judo Federation President Rashad Nabiyev addressed the opening ceremony of the world championships in Baku. He said it was a great honor for Azerbaijan to welcome the global judo community to the capital again.
“Judo is not only a contest on the tatami, but also a philosophy of self-discipline, courage and friendship,” Nabiyev said. He noted that efforts launched years ago to help young people grow up physically and morally healthy through judo are now producing tangible results.
The federation chief highlighted the role of President and National Olympic Committee President Ilham Aliyev’s support for sport in turning Azerbaijan into a hub for major sporting events. Nabiyev thanked the International Judo Federation and its president, Marius Vizer, for entrusting Baku with hosting the world championships.
He stressed that every child who comes to a judo hall should grow up not only to become a future champion, but also a worthy citizen. He wished the athletes and coaches fair competition, a strong sporting spirit and unforgettable moments.
The world championships, held at the National Gymnastics Arena, will conclude on October 11. On the first day of the competition, Azerbaijan’s Ahmad Yusifov became world champion in the 60-kilogram category.
