Priest Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari was killed on Saturday when a large wooden crucifix fell and struck him on the head during a Mass at the Perpetuo Socorro church in Guayaquil, southern Ecuador, according to the city’s archdiocese.
The archdiocese announced his death in a statement published on Facebook on Monday. Video of the livestream shows Sánchez leading the service when the cross, standing on the altar behind him, toppled over. Shouts can be heard as several people rush towards him.
According to CNN affiliate Ecuavisa, Sánchez was preparing to lead a wedding ceremony when the incident occurred. Police had not commented on the incident, Ecuavisa reported.
On Sunday, the church held a Eucharist in Sánchez’s memory, led by Cardinal Luis Cabrera, the archbishop of Guayaquil.
“We are grateful for all of the condolences from around the world, and especially for your prayers for the eternal rest of the soul of Patricio Sánchez,” the archdiocese’s statement said.
CNN said it had contacted the Archdiocese of Guayaquil for comment.
