President Ilham Aliyev received a delegation led by Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of Iran, on June 24.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that during the meeting, President Ilham Aliyev expressed his condolences regarding the recent hardships faced by the Iranian people and the loss of life in recent conflicts.
Highlighting that the Azerbaijani state and people stood by Iran during these difficult times, President Ilham Aliyev pointed to his telephone conversations with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and other high-level contacts as clear evidence of the solidarity between the two nations. The President emphasized that Azerbaijan welcomed the cessation of hostilities and noted that the country had issued an immediate official statement to that effect.
“I wish for there to be no wars in the region,” President Ilham Aliyev stated, noting that both Azerbaijan and Iran have suffered from wars in the past. The President also highlighted the importance of Ghalibaf’s participation in the 20th Session of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States, expressing hope that such events contribute to Islamic solidarity. He further noted that Azerbaijan is preparing to host the OIC Summit next year.
For his part, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf conveyed greetings from Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and expressed gratitude for the support shown by President Ilham Aliyev and the people of Azerbaijan during Iran's challenging period. Ghalibaf specifically thanked the President for his condolences following the passing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and other officials, as well as for the congratulatory letter sent to Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei upon his selection as the new Supreme Leader.
The Iranian Speaker emphasized that Iran recognized its true friends during the conflict, noting that Azerbaijan’s steadfast support and humanitarian assistance would remain in the memory of the Iranian people. He described the relationship as a testament to the unity and solidarity between the two nations.
During the discussions, both sides expressed confidence in the dynamic development of Azerbaijan-Iran relations. They noted with satisfaction the completion of the Aghband-Kalala bridge and highlighted that the Araz corridor, passing through Iranian territory, will serve to enhance transport capabilities in the region. The parties also exchanged views on the prospects for bilateral relations, including inter-parliamentary cooperation and the activities of the intergovernmental commission.
The meeting underscores the ongoing diplomatic efforts to strengthen ties between Baku and Tehran, particularly in the realms of regional infrastructure and economic connectivity, which remain central pillars of the bilateral agenda.
