During a meeting held today with US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Caleb Orr, President Ilham Aliyev showcased a commemorative gift previously presented by US President Donald Trump.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the item is a memorandum extending the waiver of Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act. The commemorative copy, signed by US President Donald Trump, includes a personal, handwritten message addressed to the head of the Azerbaijani state.
Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act, enacted in 1992, originally restricted US aid to the government of Azerbaijan. Since 2002, US presidents have consistently exercised their authority to waive this restriction, a practice that has become a significant element in the bilateral diplomatic relationship between Baku and Washington, facilitating cooperation on security and energy issues.
