Poland could eventually host up to 15,000 US troops as Warsaw seeks to establish a permanent American military base, Deputy Defense Minister Stanislaw Wziatek said on Monday, according to Polish public broadcaster TVP.
The proposed deployment could include between 4,000 and 5,000 permanently stationed US troops, as well as an additional 10,000 to 11,000 personnel deployed on a rotational basis.
“Fifteen thousand American soldiers in Poland means strength, defensive capabilities for our country, and allied cooperation,” Wziatek said.
Deployment could be phased in
Wziatek said the force could be built up gradually, potentially reaching its full size before 2039. He declined to provide further details, saying he was “very cautious” because “it’s not only Poles who are listening to us.”
His comments came after US President Donald Trump said last week that “major progress” was being made toward creating a new US Army base in Poland. Trump described the plan as a potential “historic step” in bilateral relations but did not say whether the facility would accommodate permanently stationed troops.
Ministers to discuss permanent US presence
Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz is due to meet US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in Washington on Wednesday. Their talks are expected to focus on Poland’s security and the proposed permanent US military presence.
Kosiniak-Kamysz said last week that a decision on the base was expected “in the coming weeks.” A US delegation visited Poland earlier this month to assess possible locations.
Wziatek said the facility would likely be located in western Poland, arguing that this would make it “harder to attack.” He added that the United States would make the final decision on the site.
Poland formally proposed establishing a permanent US base in June. About 10,000 US troops are currently stationed in the country, most of them on rotational deployments.
