Afghanistan’s government says Pakistani airstrikes on Kunar and Helmand provinces killed nine civilians, including women and children, and wounded 11. The strikes also destroyed three homes, according to the government.

Afghan government spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said Pakistani aircraft hit civilian homes in Chugam, in Shultan district of eastern Kunar province, and in Safar, in Garmser district of southern Helmand province. He said the attacks took place overnight.

Pakistan gives a different account of the targets

Pakistan confirmed carrying out airstrikes but disputed Kabul’s account of the targets and casualties. An official statement said the operations were based on intelligence and targeted militant camps and hideouts in two areas.

According to Pakistan’s preliminary account, 22 militants were killed and weapons and ammunition were destroyed. Islamabad denied reports of civilian deaths and said measures had been taken to prevent harm to civilians.

The conflicting claims about casualties could not be independently verified.

Tensions between Kabul and Islamabad

Mujahid condemned the strikes as an act of aggression, saying the attack violated accepted principles.

Tensions between the two countries have risen following cross-border violence and a series of Pakistani military operations in Afghan territory. Pakistan has repeatedly alleged that armed groups, particularly Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), use Afghan territory to stage attacks inside Pakistan.

Afghanistan rejects the allegation, saying it does not allow its territory to be used to threaten other countries. Mutual accusations over armed groups operating along the shared border have further strained relations in recent weeks.
