One dead after three detained while searching for gold in Lerik

R. Safarov fell from a cliff during a police operation, while E. Karimov was detained with explosives.

Police identified three people illegally digging for gold in a mountainous area of Lerik district late on the night of October 20.

"Operativ Information Center-OMM" reports that the individuals resisted arrest and tried to flee. During the attempted escape, R. Safarov fell from a rocky slope into a ravine and died from his injuries.

Another individual, E. Karimov, was detained.

Police seized piercing tools and a homemade explosive device resembling dynamite at the scene.

Measures are continuing to identify and detain the third participant in the incident.

The regional group of the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ Press Service confirmed the information.
