Police temporarily sealed off Albrecht Dürer Airport in Nuremberg and suspended operations on Tuesday after a suspected in-flight emergency involving a flight arriving from Greece, authorities said.
“We are operating under the suspicion of an in-flight emergency, though this has not yet been officially confirmed,” a police spokesperson said. Investigations are continuing.
The deployment began shortly before the scheduled landing of a flight from the Greek island of Corfu. Airport officials said the aircraft landed safely. German news agency dpa reported that an emergency code was transmitted while the plane was airborne and that German Air Force Eurofighters were scrambled to escort it.
Earlier on Tuesday, three airline pilots separately reported a possible drone near the airfield during takeoffs and landings. Border police, air traffic control and airport management launched a search involving a police helicopter, but no drone was found.
The suspected drone sightings caused minor delays to six flights — two arrivals and four departures — before normal operations resumed.
