Tens of millions of people across the northeastern United States are facing a powerful nor’easter that has caused coastal flooding, power outages, travel disruptions and the cancellation of major events. Reuters reported on the storm.
The storm is expected to peak on Saturday, bringing dangerous coastal flooding, strong winds and heavy rain to areas including New York City and Boston, the US National Weather Service said. Emergency declarations have been issued in New York and New Jersey, where coastal communities are already experiencing severe flooding.
Flooding and power outages spread
Rain and strong winds have been forecast from Virginia to Maine. Nearly 150,000 households have lost electricity, according to PowerOutage.us, while the Federal Aviation Administration has advised passengers to check their flight status with airlines.
More than 1,100 flights were delayed and about 400 were cancelled, according to FlightAware. The full moon on Saturday was expected to worsen coastal flooding, with streets and homes inundated in the New Jersey communities of Surf City and Manasquan.
The National Weather Service urged residents to prepare for “significant inundation in low-lying areas near the shore, including roads underwater and impacts to homes and businesses”.
Events cancelled across New York and Boston
New York officials warned of wind gusts reaching 55 mph (86 km/h), which could bring down trees and cause further power outages. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel and warned them not to drive or walk through floodwater.
In the Boston area, the Red Sox postponed their weekend series against the Chicago Cubs, moving Sunday’s game to next Friday. A professional football match between Red Bull New York and St Louis City SC was also cancelled.
The Global Citizen Festival in New York’s Central Park, which was scheduled to feature Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean and John Legend, will not go ahead. “Ed Sheeran” also cancelled his concert at Gillette Stadium near Boston for safety reasons, the venue said.
