Mexico will dispatch humanitarian aid, including food supplies, to Cuba this week and is actively seeking diplomatic avenues to facilitate oil exports to the island nation. According to Operative Information Center-OMM, the statement was made by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum during a recent press briefing.
President Sheinbaum clarified the nature of these efforts, explicitly denying reports that she had discussed the situation surrounding the Caribbean island with US President Donald Trump. She emphasized that her administration is committed to resolving all issues related to oil supplies to Cuba through diplomatic channels, citing humanitarian reasons as the primary driver for the initiative. The President further noted that this decision aligns with Mexico's historical foreign policy and asserted that oil supply remains a sovereign decision of the Mexican state.
Cuba is currently grappling with a severe and deepening economic crisis, characterized by acute fuel shortages that have crippled the national power grid. These energy deficits result in daily blackouts often exceeding 12 hours, impacting essential services and the daily lives of citizens. Mexico has traditionally maintained a policy of non-intervention and solidarity with Latin American and Caribbean nations, frequently providing technical and resource support during regional energy emergencies.
