US authorities are searching for six people after a medical plane bound for Boston went missing off the coast of Massachusetts early Saturday.
The Federal Aviation Administration told the BBC it lost contact with the Gulfstream G-100 and issued a search-and-rescue notice shortly after 01:00 local time (06:00 GMT).
Search underway near Nantucket
An air and sea search is underway off Nantucket, a Massachusetts island, the US Coast Guard’s Northeast District said.
Flight data from “FlightAware” showed the plane left L.F. Wade International Airport in Bermuda at 23:40 local time. It was due to land at Boston Logan International Airport at 01:30 EDT (06:30 GMT).
Aircraft lost contact during flight
The Coast Guard said the aircraft’s tail number identified it as belonging to “Latitude Air Ambulances”, which provides international medical flights for patients returning home.
Data from “FlightAware” showed the plane’s altitude falling sharply from about 7,300 metres (24,000 feet) to 3,300 metres (11,000 feet) before its communications went dark.
