Araz-Nakhchivan head coach Yuri Maksimov assessed his team’s performance after their 2-1 defeat to Sumgayit in the eighth round of the Misli Premier League. At a post-match news conference, the Ukrainian coach said his players lacked confidence.
Maksimov said his team had played well in the first half and should have maintained its advantage after taking the lead. He said the players retreated into their own defensive half, allowing the team to concede avoidable goals.
Maksimov: We tried to protect the score
Discussing the second half, the coach said his players wanted to protect their lead and play more simply. However, that approach put the team in a difficult position.
“The team wanted to protect the score. We tried to play more simply. As a result, we put ourselves in a difficult position,” Maksimov said.
Araz-Nakhchivan, bottom of the standings after eight rounds, will continue to fight, the coach said. He added that the team would work with the squad it has and would not lose heart.
