French President Emmanuel Macron said he and US President Donald Trump discussed diplomatic efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, increase shipping through the waterway and ease tensions in the Middle East.
Speaking after their meeting in New York on Monday, Macron said the leaders also addressed the security of oil routes in the Red Sea, support for Ukraine and energy-related issues linked to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, according to the original report.
Strait of Hormuz and Red Sea shipping
Macron said there was a shared desire to “do everything to open” the Strait of Hormuz and “free up volumes”. He also said the two presidents discussed securing shipping routes in the Red Sea without further escalating regional tensions.
Support for Ukraine
The French president said Trump and he discussed providing Ukraine with interceptors for air defence “even faster and stronger”. They also revisited possible initiatives aimed at establishing a moratorium on energy-related issues.
Macron said he was scheduled to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Further discussions involving the US and Ukraine were planned for Tuesday.
