Lithuania has evidence that a drone which crashed on its territory on Sunday entered from Poland, presidential national security adviser Deividas Matulionis said on Monday, according to Lithuanian public broadcaster LRT. Anadolu Agency reported the remarks.
Matulionis was responding to a report by Polish news portal Polsat News that the drone may have been launched from Lithuania, citing sources at Poland’s Defense Ministry. He said Lithuania had not received official information from Poland confirming that account.
Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said several scenarios were being examined and that he expected the military to provide an explanation.
The drone entered Lithuanian airspace on Sunday morning, triggering an air alert in parts of the country. Its wreckage was later found near the village of Juodzioniai in northern Lithuania, where debris damaged a civilian vehicle. No injuries were reported.
NATO fighter jets were sent to investigate but could not visually identify the object because of cloudy weather.
Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry said the drone may have been diverted by Russian electronic warfare while Ukraine was conducting operations against military targets in Russia. Kyiv expressed regret over the incident and pledged to cooperate with Lithuania to establish what happened.
