Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused European countries of doing “everything they can to thwart” prospects for peace talks between Russia and Ukraine during an address to the UN General Assembly in New York on Saturday, according to the source report.
Lavrov alleged that Western countries were “pumping” Ukraine with weapons and assisting Kyiv in attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure using drones and missiles.
“The West aspires to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia, but these aspirations will result in the warmongers being led into a strategic dead end,” he said.
Lavrov addresses Middle East conflict
Turning to the Middle East, Lavrov said Russia believed the region’s “main issue” should now be resolved by establishing Palestinian statehood, citing “countless” United Nations decisions.
He also called on the United States to immediately release former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife. Lavrov described the use of force that killed Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as “unacceptable.”
Russia backs global AI cooperation
On artificial intelligence, Lavrov said Moscow supported China’s initiative to create a global organisation for cooperation on AI.
