The presidents of Iran, Russia and Azerbaijan met in Turkmenistan on Friday to discuss expanding cooperation, with a focus on economic, trade and regional affairs, Iran’s presidency said.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev held talks on the sidelines of a summit of Commonwealth of Independent States leaders and a Caspian environmental summit, according to a statement from the Iranian presidency.

The leaders discussed issues of mutual interest and exchanged views on ways to strengthen cooperation among their countries, the statement said.

They noted the potential to expand relations and said the countries should make greater use of their shared capacities and opportunities to advance economic, trade and regional cooperation.

The discussions also covered cooperation related to the Caspian Sea and broader regional issues. The presidents emphasized closer cooperation among countries in the region, particularly around the Caspian, and making use of existing opportunities to pursue shared objectives.
