Iran has ordered a Swedish diplomat to leave the country. The decision came after Stockholm expelled an employee of Iran’s embassy.
Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Sweden’s ambassador to Tehran on Thursday to protest Stockholm’s “destructive” policy. The ministry criticized Sweden’s “unacceptable rhetoric” regarding Iran and its hosting of anti-Iran groups and individuals.
The Swedish ambassador was told that a Swedish diplomat must leave Iran within 48 hours from Thursday. The ministry said it had explained the reasons for the diplomat’s expulsion to the ambassador.
Iran also summoned Germany’s ambassador to Tehran. An official protest was conveyed over statements by senior German officials concerning the war waged by Israel and the United States against Iran, Iran’s nuclear program and its regional allies.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei had earlier criticized German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s comments on the conflict. Baghaei said Berlin had presented a “distorted narrative” about the war and that it had been launched by the United States and Israel, not Iran.
He also accused Germany of failing to condemn attacks on Iran while accusing Tehran. Baghaei said Berlin should not portray itself as a supporter of peace and a moral authority.
Tensions rise over Iran’s nuclear program
The diplomatic confrontation comes amid tensions over Iran’s nuclear program and recent developments at the International Atomic Energy Agency. The United States and the European “E3” countries — France, Germany and the United Kingdom — submitted a joint resolution against Iran to the IAEA Board of Governors.
The resolution claimed that Iran had failed to meet its obligations to the UN nuclear watchdog. Tehran says wartime conditions have prevented inspections at nuclear facilities damaged in attacks.
Baghaei said after the resolution was adopted that referring Iran’s nuclear issue to the UN Security Council would be unjustified. The Iranian official stressed that the alleged violations resulted from attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran’s nuclear facilities.
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi also called the resolution “politically motivated and legally distorted.” He said the move undermined trust, cooperation and diplomacy.
Meanwhile, Iran welcomed Russia and China’s opposition to a draft resolution prepared by the United States at the UN Security Council. Tehran said the draft sought to restore the mandate of an expert panel linked to the UN sanctions committee established under Resolution 1737.
Iran said the draft was not adopted after objections from Russia and China. Tehran praised the positions of Moscow and Beijing, as well as the positions of Somalia and Pakistan and their decision to abstain.
