Hungarian President Andras Baka has warned that the United Nations is facing a “crisis of trust”, saying it too often fails to act when powerful countries and their allies violate international rules, according to the speech delivered at the UN General Assembly.
Baka said no country should be above the law and rejected applying different standards based on which country was involved.
“We cannot have one rule for our friends and another for others,” he said.
However, he said the response should not be to abandon the UN, arguing that the organisation must be able to act, treat its members fairly and apply the same principles to all countries.
Baka condemns Russia’s war in Ukraine
Addressing the war in Ukraine, Baka condemned Russia’s invasion as a violation of the UN Charter and international law. He reaffirmed Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders.
The Hungarian president said diplomacy should bring the fighting to an end, but stressed that any lasting peace must respect Ukraine’s sovereignty.
“If taking territory by force becomes an accepted way of settling disputes, every smaller country will have reasons to worry about its own future,” he warned.
Call for humanitarian access in Gaza
On the Middle East, Baka called for full respect for international humanitarian law and for humanitarian aid to reach people in need safely and without interruption, referring to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
He said Israelis and Palestinians must be able to live in security and dignity and urged efforts towards a lasting peace.
On migration, Baka said Hungary would combat irregular migration and criminal networks that profit from it while respecting human dignity and refugee protections. He also expressed support for development that gives people opportunities to build their futures.
