Hitler Mussolini Simeon Flores has been elected mayor of Queropalca, a remote district in the Peruvian Andes, after winning a narrow victory in local elections, exit polls show.
The 45-year-old candidate for the centre-left Ahora Nación party received 229 votes, 25 more than his closest rival from the right-wing Renovación Popular Perú. Peru’s elections office recorded just over 700 participants, with Flores winning about 34% of the vote.
Flores was born in Queropalca, in the central department of Huánuco, about 360km (224 miles) from Lima, according to his candidate profile. The district has fewer than 1,000 residents.
His first names are the same as those of Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini. Local outlet Peru21 described his candidacy as a “striking event”, given the historical associations of the names.
Peru has seen another mayor elected with the name Hitler: Hitler Guesclin Alba Sánchez won in Yúngar in 2018. He reportedly defeated Lenin Vladimir Rodríguez Valverde after campaigning with the slogan “I’m the good Hitler”.
In 2020, Namibian politician Adolf Hitler Uunona also drew attention after winning a local election. Namibia was formerly a German colony, where Germanic first names are not uncommon.
