Germany’s Foreign Ministry summoned Iran’s ambassador after a court convicted two men of spying for Iran and preparing attacks on leaders of the Jewish community.
“Operative Information Center-OMM” reports, citing foreign media, that the German Foreign Ministry announced the summons.
The planned attacks targeted Josef Schuster, head of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, and Volker Beck, head of the German-Israeli Society.
“Deliberate attempts to attack Josef Schuster and Volker Beck will have legal consequences,” the statement said.
On October 15, the Higher Regional Court in Hamburg sentenced two men to prison for spying for Iran and planning attacks on members of Germany’s Jewish community.
The court found Ali S., 54, who lives in Denmark, and Tawab M., 43, guilty of espionage and preparing murder and arson. Ali S. was sentenced to eight and a half years in prison, while Tawab M. received a four-and-a-half-year sentence.
The men had surveilled Josef Schuster and Volker Beck, according to the report. Ali S. had also planned to set fire to a grocery store in Berlin.
